The Case for a Proper Collar

1 September 2026

A shirt collar with a patterned tie

I spend an unreasonable amount of time looking at shirt collars.

For me, it's the part that can make or break a shirt.

You can have beautiful fabric and a perfect fit, but if the collar is too small, too stiff or disappears underneath your jacket, something will always feel slightly off.

I prefer a collar with a bit of presence.

It should frame the face properly and sit naturally under a jacket. With a tie, it should have enough space to accommodate the knot. Without one, it should still hold its shape when you leave the first button open.

But I don't think a collar should look overly constructed either.

The best ones have a certain softness to them. They move a little. After being washed and worn many times, they become even better.

It's a small detail, but that's often what good clothing comes down to.

You might not immediately know why a shirt looks good.

Quite often, it's the collar.
