Can You Wear an Oxford Shirt With a Suit?
Yes. And I think you probably should.
There’s an old idea that an Oxford shirt is too casual for a suit. Technically, there’s some truth to it. Oxford cloth is heavier, softer and more textured than a classic poplin or twill. It was never intended to be the most formal shirt in your wardrobe.
That is also exactly why I like it.
A soft Oxford under a suit takes away some of the seriousness. The suit feels less like something you put on for a meeting and more like something you actually enjoy wearing.
The trick is not to fight the character of the shirt. I prefer an Oxford with softer tailoring — navy, grey, brown or linen in summer — rather than a very sharp, formal business suit. Keep the collar soft, leave the fabric with a little life in it and don't worry about making everything perfect.
Light blue is probably my favourite. White is a little cleaner. A subtle stripe works beautifully too.
Add a knitted tie if the occasion calls for one. Otherwise, leave the first button undone.
It should feel a little more Milan at six in the evening and a little less boardroom at nine in the morning.
